Overview of Telemedicine

Primitive forms of telemedicine have been in use for many years, dating back to the early 20th century with The Radio Doctor. [1] However, the advent of the internet in the last few decades, along with the invention of data-based technologies such as the MRI, CT Scan, and Positron Emission Tomography, have accelerated the use and potential of telemedicine.

Telemedicine is any technology where physicians can assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients from a distance. This can include everything from wireless monitoring of vital signs, two-way transmission of patient data to ambulances in emergency situations, to a surgeon operating on a patient many miles away via a surgical robot
